iOS 7 became available on Wednesday, September 18, and within a week it is already generating 51.8% of iOS based Internet traffic in the U.S. and Canada as measured by Chitika. This compares to 47% for iOS 6 in its first week and while a bit of apples to oranges comparison (no pun intended) Android’s Jelly Bean is only installed on 45.1% of Android devices after being released over 14 months ago. (Note my family and I own Apple shares).
Apple announced on Monday, five days after iOS 7 became available, that it was already downloaded on over 200 million devices. As a point of comparison iOS 6 adoption reached the mid-80% area in February 2013 five months after being released in September 2012.
Android adoption is hamstrung due the large number of vendors and devices that use it. While Samsung is garnering a large percentage of Android shipments in July OpenSignal measured 11,868 distinct Android devices that had downloaded its app.
Android’s Jelly Bean was initially released on July 9, 2012, and it is installed on 45.1% of Android devices. This is an increase from 40.5% in late July but still pales in comparison to the uptake on Apple devices.
The previous major release, Ice Cream Sandwich, has seen its distribution decrease from 22.5% to 21.7% over the same time frame while Gingerbread has moved from 33.1% to 30.7%.
