Bad move for Microsoft and a wake-up call for HTC because news leaked today from inside sources that said HTC may have second thoughts about manufacturing a Windows RT tablet.
Too much and no interest
HTC is struggling to get back on its feet because of a serious lack of interest by the buying public for its phone product line. However, its new HTC One may be the one thing that may help HTC to recover, and it cannot afford to produce any products that won’t be strong sellers.
According to the sources who are familiar with HTC’s future business plans, the company will not move ahead with its 12-inch display Windows RT tablet project because it would be too costly to produce and also due to the public’s strong lack of interest in the Windows RT operating system.
Bloomberg contacted HTC for a response and was told “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation.” Microsoft declined to comment.
The end of Windows RT
The rude awakening experienced by many Surface RT tablet owners, when they brought their new devices home, was the shock that it couldn’t run any Windows programs, although it was advertised as a Windows machine.
No Word, no Excel, no Photoshop, no PC games or any other popular Windows program would run on the Surface RT. Needless to say, as word spread that the machine was all but worthless for running within the Windows ecosystem, sales plummeted and return rates went up.
Although Windows RT is a variant of Windows 8, it offers no compatibility with programs that PC users run because it operates on a non-Intel processor, ARM. It’s hard to imagine what Microsoft was thinking when it released Windows RT, but it is certain that it will have a short lifespan in the same spirit as its doomed Windows ME operating system of 2000.
