Here’s a tip that will help you keep your mailing lists in check: Create a filter for incoming mail that flags anything containing the word “unsubscribe” and shunts it into a folder of its own. Since almost all bulk emails include a footer with a link to unsubscribe, this trick will catch just about every piece of mass mail you get, filing it someplace out of the way so you can read it at your leisure.
This won’t catch spam, mind you. But it will catch all the stuff you want to sift through eventually. The event calendar at your local bar, retweet notices, LinkedIn updates, offers from Amazon, on-sale info for Dinosaur Jr. tickets. It keeps all this stuff out of your main inbox and lets you save it for later. And if you choose to ignore it all, the system makes for easy disposal.

As an example, here’s how to do it in Gmail:

1. In Settings, go to the “Filters” tab.
2. You’ll see a list of existing filters. At the bottom, click on “Create a new filter.”
3. You’ll see a dialog asking you to enter search options. Fill out only one field: the one marked “Has the words.” Enter the word “unsubscribe” and click “create filter with this search.”
4. The next dialog lets you set the actions for this filter. You’re going to choose three actions. Check “Skip the Inbox (Archive it),” then check “Apply the label” and give it a label like “Bulk” or “List mail.” Lastly, check the box at the bottom that says “Also apply filter to matching conversations.”
