Summer 2013 over, which that means companies are getting ready to announce the smartphones they’ll be pushing this holiday season. What this means for smartphones buyers is that the post-Galaxy S4, post-Moto X, post-iPhone 5S lull in the smartphone market is about to be ended, and we’ll soon be greeted by a fresh crop of excellent Android phones.
Most folks only get one upgrade every two years, so you really have to make it count — but the allure of the upcoming smartphone makes it hard to wait for the right one. There are some very interesting upcoming Android smartphones, so maybe you want to resist the urge to buy one of those new handsets and tough it out for a few more months.
Let’s see what upcoming Android phones are going to be worth your upgrade…

Nexus 5

Nexus 5

The rumor mill has been flowing freely with news about the next Nexus phone, currently being called Nexus 5. Google could still choose a completely different name for it, but leaked build data is now referring to the “Hammerhead” device as Nexus 5. After appearing briefly in Google’s KitKat statue unveiling, the Nexus 5 made a quick stop off at the FCC when images of it were mistakenly attached to an LG G2 test document.
We can now safely say that the Nexus 5 will be running Android 4.4 KitKat when it is announced in the coming weeks. This will probably be the main selling point of the new Nexus. It and the other devices sold by Google will be the only way to experience the latest and greatest software for at least a few months.
All signs point to this being an LG-made device with very similar specs to those found in the G2. So that means a 5-inch 1080p screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a multi-band LTE radio. It will be closer to the head of the pack in specs than any previous Nexus device.
Google has been selling unlocked Nexus phones for $300-350 through Google Play these last few years. However, with the 2013 Nexus 7, Mountain View did bump the price a bit over last year’s model. The Nexus 5 might clock in a bit higher than last year’s model, but it’s sure to be one of the most affordable unlocked devices out there when it is released. Rumors are indicating a late October or early November street date for this device.
Oppo

Oppo N1

Most people are not paying close enough attention to the Android ROM scene to notice the drama surrounding Cyanogen Inc. This for-profit company was founded by members of the CyanogenMod team with the goal of making and selling CyanogenMod-equipped devices. The first phone on that list comes from Oppo in the form of the newly announced N1.
Many American consumers aren’t familiar with the Chinese OEM Oppo, but the company has earned high praise for its recent unlocked devices. The N1 will be sold with your choice of Oppo’s custom Android UI, or pure CyanogenMod (as a special edition). There will even be an option to flash a stable build of Cyanogen when you first boot the standard Oppo N1.
This is a high end device that does have some unusual features. The screen is a 5.9-inch 1080p LCD, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, and 2GB of RAM. The 13MP camera sensor rotates all the way around to face front so you can take super-high quality selfies. There is also a back touchpad for scrolling without touching the screen.
