Almost a decade after Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for consoles, the game maker is reviving the popular title on mobile devices.
Expected to hit various mobile platforms next month, the updated game comes with remastered graphics, "including dynamic and detailed shadows, greater draw distance, an enriched color palette, plus enhanced character and car models," according to Rockstar.
GTA: San Andreas gained popularity during the PlayStation 2 era. When it launched in late 2004, the game sent players on a journey through the semi-fictional state of San Andreas with Carl "CJ" Johnson and his gang, the Grove Street Families.
CJ and the gang will soon return in what Rockstar called "the best-looking version of San Andreas yet."
The mobile title also features brand new touch controls, including contextual options that display buttons only when needed, plus three different control schemes for driving and maneuvering. GTA: San Andreas also boasts a revamped checkpoint system for easier progression.
Making its debut on handheld devices, the game also comes equipped with full controller support, including Made for iOS controller capability for iOS 7.
The reworked game will be available for select iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle, and Windows Phone devices. There is no word yet on an exact launch date.
In the meantime, fans can get their fix of fast cars, big guns, and scantily clad women in the most recent incarnation of Rockstar's popular game, Grant Theft Auto 5. The title launched Sept. 17 for Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and broke seven Guinness world records, including the highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours. The action-adventure title topped $1 billion in sales after just three days on the market.
Last week, the GTA 5 companion app, iFruit, hit the Windows Phone Store, providing gamers with news, additional features, and more.
