It may be true that the smartphone market is a real battlefield for iOS vs. Android, but it doesn’t look like the playing field is quite as level on the tablet front. As far as Android tablets have come, it looks like the iPad is still the king of the bigger touchscreen castle, accounting for some 81% of the market.
This figure comes by way of Apple CEO Tim Cook during the special iPad event they held in San Francisco earlier today. It was there that we saw the unveiling of the new iPad Air and the iPad Mini with Retina Display. The number describes the share of tablet usage and not tablet sales, so take that for what you will.
At the same event, Mr. Cook started rattling off a few more interesting iPad stats. For instance, the company has now surpassed the 170 million mark for total iPads sold. The App Store also now contains an incredible 475,000 iPad apps, which is likely one of the reasons why the iPad is favored over Android tablets; the latter have a lot of apps too, but many are just blown up smartphone apps rather than being designed specifically for bigger screens. They are working on that, though.
