As expected, the fifth-generation full-sized iPad was formally revealed to the world earlier today and it’s going to be called the iPad Air. That’s because it’s 20% thinner, borrowing the same kind of naming scheme we see in the MacBook Air.
The newest addition to the iPad family falls in line with most of the urmors. It still has a 9.7-inch screen, but this is a new Retina Display that is 7.5mm thin (the previous one was 9.4mm). The iPad Air also features a 43% thinner bezel and weighs just one pound, offering a “dramatically different experience to hold,” according to Phil Schiller.
The iPad Air gets the same A7 chip that we find in the iPhone 5S, coming along with a 5MP iSight camera, improved Facetime HD camera, dual microphones, 10 hour battery life, M7 motion co-processor, and MIMO Wi-Fi. So, it’s pretty much an iPhone 5S, shoved into a 9.7-inch shell. The rumored keyboard case and Touch ID fingerprint scanner were both notably absent from the announcements.
Expect the new iPad Air, which replaces the iPad 4 (but the iPad 2 will stick around as an entry-level full-size tablet), to launch in over 40 countries on November 1. Pricing starts at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, going up to $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB and $799 for 128GB. The WiFi+Cellular models are offered in the same capacities for $130 more. Canadians can also expect to pay a $20 premium across the board. Choose from silver and white or space gray and black.
