The latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reveals that Apple iOS's market share in the big five European markets – including UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain – is up 3.1 per cent year-on-year, compared to Android growth of 2.9 per cent.
Meanwhile, Windows Phone posted its highest ever share, hitting 8.2 per cent across the five major European markets, and emerging as a key player in the smartphone race.
The trend was even more pronounced in the UK, where iOS market share increased by 7.8 per cent year-on-year and Windows Phone increased by 5 per cent, while Android saw a decline of 3.8 percent – in a quarter when several flagship Android devices launched including Samsung Galaxy S4.
Kantar said that Windows Phone’s growth comes from convincing first-time smartphone buyers to choose one of its devices, with 42 per cent of sales over the past year coming from existing "featurephone" owners.
"This is a much higher proportion than Android and iOS. The Lumia 520 is hitting a sweet spot, offering the price and quality that new smartphone buyers are looking for," said Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
