Despite not having the app-centric cred of something like Evernote, Microsoft's OneNote for the iPhone and iPad is a fine note taking and data management app, and it just got more useful. A huge update has been pushed to the App Store that gives the app a big boost in the functionality department. Version 2.1 untethers OneNote from the PC and streamlines the package.
When OneNote was released, it was essentially a companion to your Windows-based OneNote application. The functionality of the iOS app was limited—one might say artificially so. This update adds the ability to create new notebooks in SkyDrive through your OneNote app. These notebooks will sync to all your other connected devices. However, this functionality is only available on the iPad. The iPhone is still limited in this regard.
The iPad also gains support for adding, renaming, and deleting sections. Again, the iPhone is left out. It's nice to have one less reason to put down your device and go to the PC, but a little more iPhone love would be nice. Both devices are getting automatic list detection, and the file size for the iPhone version has been reduced by half. Of course the update still comes with the usual collection of bug fixes and tweaks.
Microsoft seems to be getting the idea with mobile apps slowly but surely. There have been rumors for years that Redmond was planning to release a full version of Office on mobile platforms, but that hasn't happened yet.
Note that the iPad and iPhone have their own unique versions of the app instead of a single universal app. Both are free to use.
