Worldwide tablet shipment dropped by 9.7 per cent to 45.1 million units from
the first quarter, but figures
showed a year-on-year growth of 59.6 per cent - up from the 28.3 million
devices shipped in the equivalent period of 2012.
Market leader Apple saw
a lower-than-predicted shipment total of 14.6 million tablets, down from
19.5 million in the first quarter.
Apple has traditionally shown strong growth at this time of year, when it used
to launch new tablets. Now the company plans to launch tablet products in
the second half of the year, putting them on the market ahead of the holiday
season.
Samsung, in
second place to Apple in the tablet market, also showed a decline, down from
8.6 million to 8.1 million units over the quarter.
Tom Mainelli, a research director at the International Data Corporation (IDC),
which compiled the figures, said: “A new iPad launch always piques consumer
interest in the tablet category and traditionally has helped both Apple and
its competitors.
