Adobe identified the attack on September 17 and began notifying customers "immediately" after it disclosed the breach on October 3, according to company spokeswoman Heather Edell.
"Email notifications are taking longer than we anticipated," she said.
The company has had to validate email addresses of those affected, and also limit the number of notifications sent at any one time to make sure they don't get blocked by email providers or tagged as spam, she said.
Edell said the company has notified by email and letter some 2.9 million Adobe customers with credit or debit card information taken by the attackers.
It is in the process of notifying tens of millions of others who have Adobe ID accounts for using its customer website, she said. She declined to provide a specific number on how many had been affected, saying the investigation was still ongoing.
A file containing information on some 152 million Adobe ID accounts has circulated on the Internet for at least three weeks. It includes email addresses along with encrypted passwords and password hints, according to multiple security firms that have reviewed its contents.
Yet Edell said it was not accurate to say 152 million customer accounts had been compromised because the database attacked was a backup system about to be decommissioned.

She said the records included some 25 million records containing invalid email addresses, and 18 million with invalid passwords.

Back in September, Adobe announced its $10 monthly Photoshop Photography Program subscription as a secondary option to a full-blown Creative Cloud membership. Initially, users had to own CS3 or later to be eligible, but now the creative software outfit has opened up the offer to everyone. That's right, ten bucks per month will net you Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5, a Behance membership with ProSite access and 20GB of cloud storage. The catch? You'll still have to commit to a yearly agreement that's billed monthly (just like regular ol' CC) and decide whether or not to take the plunge before the offer runs out on December 2nd. The good news is that this appears to be the permanent price tag instead of an introductory offer to attract more users before a rate hike.

Upon expiration, the Photoshop Photography Program will continue to be available for $10 per month to owners of previous versions of Photoshop Photoshop Extended, or Creative Suite, version CS3 or later (CS3.x, CS4, CS5.x, or CS6). That offer expires Dec. 31, 2013.

Adobe's been embarrassed over the past few weeks after it was revealed that some 150 million customer records were leaked online — and that Adobe had been using some questionable methods to protect that information in the first place. In a clever spin, some of that information has been turned into a playable crossword puzzle that helps remind people just how insecure common password choices can be.
Ben Falconer put together the project, called simply Adobe Crossword, after being inspired by the web comic XKCD. The collection of 10 crossword puzzles use the most common 1,000 passwords found in the leak as its answers, with up to 50 user-supplied clues serving as the questions. There's a heavy dose of the obvious — "adobereader," "password1," and even "0123456789" all make appearances — though there's also a mixture of car and pop culture references.
Adobe came under fire because although the passwords themselves had been encrypted the user emails and password hints had been stored as text. Falconer writes that he can't be absolutely certain that the answers in his puzzles are correct, but given the hints and the general tendency for people to be less than careful when it comes to picking passwords his choices appear to be quite clearly correct. In either case, the crossword serves as a gamified reminder of the importance of picking unique — and secure — passwords for every online account you use.

Adobe confirmed that a computer security firm had found records stolen from its data center, but downplayed the significance of the findings.
A computer security firm has uncovered data it says belongs to some 152 million Adobe Systems Inc user accounts, suggesting that a breach reported a month ago is far bigger than Adobe has so far disclosed and is one of the largest on record.
LastPass, a password security firm, said on Thursday that it has found email addresses, encrypted passwords and password hints stored in clear text from Adobe user accounts on an underground website frequented by cyber criminals.
Adobe said last week that attackers had stolen data on more than 38 million customer accounts, on top of the theft of information on nearly 3 million accounts that it disclosed nearly a month earlier.

The maker of Photoshop and Acrobat software confirmed that LastPass had found records stolen from its data center, but downplayed the significance of the security firm's findings.
While the new findings from LastPass indicate that the Adobe breach is far bigger than previously known, company spokeswoman Heather Edell said it was not accurate to say 152 million customer accounts had been compromised because the database attacked was a backup system about to be decommissioned.
She said the records include some 25 million records containing invalid email addresses, 18 million with invalid passwords. She added that "a large percentage" of the accounts were fictitious, having been set up for one-time use so that their creators could get free software or other perks.
She also said that the company is continuing to work with law enforcement and outside investigators to determine the cost and scope of the breach, which resulted in the theft of customer data as well as source code to several software titles.

"123456" was the most popular password among the millions of Adobe users whose details were stolen during an attack on the company.
About 1.9 million people used the sequence, according to analysis of data lost in the leak.
Online copies of the data have let security researchers find out more about users' password-creating habits.
The analysis suggests that many people are making it easy for attackers by using easy-to-guess passwords.
Word games
On 4 October, Adobe reported that its systems had been penetrated by attackers who had stolen the online credentials for millions of its users.
Early reports suggested about 2.9 million records had been compromised.
Top of the list, with 1.9 million entries, was the "123456" string of numbers. Second was the slightly longer "123456789" sequence.
Other popular easy-to-guess passwords included "adobe123", "qwerty" and "password".
Mr Gosney said the results of the analysis should be treated with caution because, so far, no-one had access to the keys that Adobe used to encrypt the data.
However, he added, flaws in the way Adobe had stored and encrypted passwords along with clues in the giant file of data had made it possible to draw up a list that he was "fairly confident" was accurate.
Computer security researchers who study password-creating habits have also seized on the data dump as a way to refine the word lists they use to attack login systems in a bid to make them more secure.

Adobe has become the latest big-name data breach victim.
The company that mainstreamed desktop publishing admitted in a statement that hackers gained unauthorized access to 2.9 million customer accounts and stole part of the source code that underlies its products.
"The Adobe breach shows that everyone is fair game," says Eduard Goodman, chief privacy officer at risk management firm IDentity Theft 911. "The hackers went in and stole private consumer information in the form of card information, even if it was encrypted, and they stole intellectual property. Those are two valuable assets. "
This news was flushed out by Brian Krebs, author of the cybersecurity blog,krebsonsecurity.com.
Krebs last week disclosed similar breaches at data aggregator LexisNexis, Kroll Background America and Dunn & Bradstreet. These scoops are the result of analysis Krebs has been doing with Alex Holden, CISO of Hold Security LLC, of a massive trove of data found on a server used by cybercriminals.
Krebs and Holden found that the crooks' stored what appeared to be source code for Adobe Acrobat and Adobe ColdFusion, a web app development tool.
This could rank as one of the more devastating attacks against a tech giant. Adobe touches every personal computing device that uses its Acrobat document reader to open PDF files, and every app developer using Adobe ColdFusion to design the next hit web app.
It's a safe bet that the bad guys are hard at work devising novel ways to corrupt media and services that spin out of those widely used Adobe products. Their likely end game: innovate new ways to take control of computing devices and sneak deep inside corporate networks.
Adobe has become a prime target of hackers for the past two years. Both good guy and bad guy researchers have been uncovering a string of zero-day security holes, forcing the company to issue patches.
"These are valuable assets," Goodman says. "It just goes to show that it doesn't matter who you are. Everyone is targeted. Hackers are always going to find the weak link."
In a blog post, Brad Arkin, chief security officer of Adobe, said: "Very recently, Adobe's security team discovered sophisticated attacks on our network, involving the illegal access of customer information as well as source code for numerous Adobe products. We believe these attacks may be related.
"Our investigation currently indicates that the attackers accessed Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords on our systems. We also believe the attackers removed from our systems certain information relating to 2.9 million Adobe customers, including customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and other information relating to customer orders. At this time, we do not believe the attackers removed decrypted credit or debit card numbers from our systems. We deeply regret that this incident occurred. We're working diligently internally, as well as with external partners and law enforcement, to address the incident."
