The official iOS app of Google Drive has just been updated to version 2.0.
Most notably, Google Drive 2.0 features a new design that’s based on the style of the soon to be officially released iOS 7. Most importantly, though, it makes for easier browsing and previewing of files stored in Google’s file syncing service.
“One of the features you’ve told us you want on Drive for iOS is the ability to effortlessly browse and preview files, just like you can on Android,” writes Google software engineer Kelvin Chan in a new post on the official Google Drive blog. “Today’s update delivers that same card-style thumbnail layout, along with a number of other upgrades that make it even easier to use Drive on your iPhone or iPad.”
In the latest version of Google Drive for iOS, you can now toggle between the new thumbnail view and the traditional list view with a single tap. You can now also view and edit files in landscape mode and see separate groupings of files and folders.
More often than not, though, you may find yourself searching for a particular file rather than browsing for it. In that case, you’ll be glad to see that search has been brought to the forefront of Google Drive for iOS.
Other improvements included in the new version of the Google Drive app let you easily copy the link for any file, move a file to a folder, or share a file.
Google Drive was last updated in July with the option to open links either in Chrome or in Safari when links are clicked from within files, plus the ability to insert rows and columns using the “+” button in spreadsheets.
Before that, the app was updated in April with landscape editing on iPhone and faster loading with support for quicker editing, and in June with support for swiping through images and support for viewing, creating, resolving, and replying to comments in files.
