Buffalo Technology has launched the world's fastest external hard drive, the DriveStation DDR, claiming it has transfer speeds that are twice those of competing products.
The hard drive comes with 1GB of DDR3 memory as cache, a first of its kind, which significantly boosts data speeds, while the USB 3.0 connection further enhances speed, in comparison to older USB 2.0 devices.
The DriveStation DDR is capable of impressive write speeds of over 400MB/s and read speeds of over 330MB/s, five times the rate of previous Buffalo external hard drives and double the rate of rival storage. This approaches the speeds of typical consumer solid-state drives.
To put this into perspective, 800MB of digital photos can be transferred from a PC to the hard drive in less than 3.5 seconds, while a whopping 3,000 photos can be moved in just 13.1 seconds.
Of course, speed is nothing without storage, so the DDR comes in two large capacities: 2TB and 3TB. The hard drive will run on most operating systems, including Windows 8 and Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.
The DDR is available immediately in the UK for £129 including VAT for the 2TB model, and £169 including VAT for the 3TB model.
