he store in question is located in Canberra, Australia. The actual model of iPad involved was thought to be an iPad Air, but that’s not been verified. Whichever model it was, it acted as a demo unit staff could show customers, so it was clearly being used a lot. That also means it was probably always plugged in to keep the battery full, or at least charged much more regularly than a typical consumer unit would be.
A spokesperson for Vodafone reported that flames appeared to burst out of the charging port on the iPad. Apple has since visited the store to collect the tablet for further testing, but it’s clear this has to be an issue related to the battery. Either the unit was faulty, or the battery had been damaged in some way during use.
What’s concerning is that this can happen at all. A damaged unit should stop working, not burst into flames, but then you could argue that’s the risk taken when packing so much energy into such a small space. Sometimes, things will go wrong.
In this instance no one was hurt and the fire brigade made the store safe again. A 23-year-old Chinese woman wasn’t so lucky earlier this year when she died after being electrocuted by her iPhone. However, that looks to be the fault of an unofficial charger rather than the iPhone itself.
