Apple investors who were worried about the iPhone 5c eating into the company’s margins now have yet another report from the East that should help ease their concerns. Plugged-in Taiwan-based market research firm TrendForce on Wednesday issued a report stating that combined shipments of Apple’s new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones accounted for more than 60% of the 33.8 million iPhones Apple sold last quarter. The firm also estimated that 5s and 5c shipments were split fairly evenly in Q3.
Moving forward, however, TrendFore says Apple has slashed iPhone 5c orders by a whopping 11 million units in the fourth quarter due to slower than expected sales, and the company increased iPhone 5s orders significantly to accommodate continued heavy demand. As a result, the firm expects the 5c to account for just 24% of total iPhone sales in the holiday quarter while the iPhone 5s makes up the lion’s share of Q4 iPhone sales.
TrendForce expects total holiday-quarter iPhone sales to grow to 48.9 million units, up a mere 2.2% from 47.8 million in the year-ago quarter.

One of the biggest surprises in the tech world this year came when Apple decided that it wouldn’t try to attract consumers in emerging markets by releasing a truly low-cost iPhone. Instead, the iPhone 5c that the company launched in September is mostly another high-end smartphone that’s slightly less expensive than the iPhone 5s off-contract because of its older hardware and cheaper plastic casing. Chinese manufacturer Lenovo, which has been the one company to actually thrive during the great PC sales collapse of 2013, now sees an opportunity to deliver to consumers in emerging markets and is planning to target consumers whom Apple has failed to reach with the iPhone 5c.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said that the company’s goal is to serve markets where “the iPhone is probably not the best-selling product” because it’s seen as too expensive. This means that Lenovo will start expanding its reach beyond the Chinese market and into territories where the competition isn’t as fierce, such as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Of course many smartphone vendors, including Huawei, BlackBerry and Samsung, have been trying to make waves in these emerging markets over the past few years. But Lenovo’s brand recognition and big marketing budget give it an edge to push its way into markets where it doesn’t have a big presence selling smartphones.Lenovo will get a particular boost in countries such as Brazil where it’s done a good job of selling PCs despite a declining overall market.

The new iPhones have apparently convinced only a small percentage of iPhone 5 owners to upgrade.
Polling 400 US phone customers that activated an iPhone between September 20 and October 20, research firm CIRP found that only 6 percent of iPhone 5 owners jumped to an 5S or 5C. In contrast, 12 percent of iPhone 4S owners had upgraded to the iPhone 5 over the same period last year.
Further, among the two-thirds of those polled who upgraded from any iPhone to the 5S or 5C in September and October, fewer jumped ship from the iPhone 5 relative to the number of all iPhone owners who moved from the 4S to the 5 last year.
"Ideally, Apple attracts a significant percent of its customers from Android and other systems," CIRP partner and co-founder Mike Levin said in a statement. "At the most recent launch, though, Apple saw an increase in the share of customers that already had an iPhone. Perhaps because of the declining base of non-smartphone owners, a smaller percentage of iPhone buyers upgraded from a basic or flip phone, compared to the year-ago launch."
Do the results signal a spiraling interest in the iPhone? Or do they mean that a fair number of people have passed on the 5S or 5C in anticipation of the iPhone 6?
Apple releases a major new iPhone once every two years, with a minor S upgrade in between. It seems reasonable to assume that the minor upgrades attract fewer people than do the major ones. A certain number of iPhone 5 and Android owners could simply be holding out for the next-generation iPhone.

Apple may be enlisting a couple more suppliers to help meet demand for its mobile products.
Later this year, the iPhone maker will tap into the resources of Taiwan-based Wistron to build 5C handsets, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday, citing "people familiar with the supply chain." Next year, Apple will employ Compal Communications, also based in Taiwan, to produce the iPad Mini.
Apple typically relies on Foxconn, aka Hon Hai, for much of the manufacturing of its mobile devices. But that relationship has had its ups and downs.
Foxconn has been criticized for its unsafe labor practices, creating a headache for Apple. A high return rate for defective iPhone 5 units has also triggered a disagreement between Apple and Foxconn over which one should pay for the repair costs, J.P. Morgan analyst Alvin Kwock told the Journal.
Even under better circumstances, Foxconn would be hard pressed to produce all of the iPhones required by Apple.
"Apple has raised this quarter's iPhone 5S orders from Hon Hai as demand has been stronger than expected," an unnamed Hon Hai executive told the Journal. "But it takes time to boost production capacity and Apple can't find other assemblers to increase production to meet demand immediately."
And as Apple cooks up even more products, such as the 5C and iPad Mini 2, the company has little recourse but to seek out more manufacturers to meet the rising demand for its growing lineup.

Philippine carriers Smart and Globe have announced that they will launch the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on November 15, suggesting that Apple may be planning to roll out its new iPhones in a broader fourth wave of countries on that date. The news comes as Apple launched both new iPhones in the second wave of countries late last week and will also rollout the iPhone to 16 other countries this Friday, November 1.

AppAdvice also has a theory on the matter, giving a potential list of countries for the fourth wave of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5s launches based simply on other countries where the iPhone 5 launched on the same date as in the Philippines last year:

After looking back to the countries grouped with the Philippines for the sixth wave of last year’s iPhone 5 launch, and removing the territories which have (or will have) already received the new smartphones, we’re expecting Apple to bring its iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c to some or all of the following countries on Nov. 15:

Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Ecuador, Grenada, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Qatar, South Africa, and Venezuela.
After its November 1 rollout, Apple will have brought the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c to a total of over 60 countries, which will move the company closer to its stated target of avaliability in 100 countries before the end of the year.

Overall, supplies of the iPhone 5s remain constrained, with shipping times in the United States and a number of other countries still at two to three weeks. Supplies of the iPhone 5c, however, remain plentiful with estimated shipping times of 24 hours.

Apple's new flagship iPhone 5s and mid-range iPhone 5c were both among the top three sellers for the big four United States wireless carriers in September, investment bank Canaccord Genuity said Friday. The Touch ID-enabled iPhone 5s and new, colorful iPhone 5c took first and second place, respectively, for AT&T and Sprint but the iPhone 5c was pushed down one notch by Samsung's Galaxy S4 at Verizon and T-Mobile retailers.

The new iPhones vaulted Apple back atop the leader board as the top-selling smartphone vendor in the United States in September, a position held by Samsung for the preceding three months. Helping the company along were reportedly healthy sales of the three-year-old iPhone 4S, which customers can get for free on a two-year contract.

Canaccord notes that their research showed "very strong initial sales and back orders for the iPhone 5s and strong iPhone 5c sales" in both the U.S. and international markets. The devices launched to record-breaking sales numbers in their late September opening weekend and demand still far outstrips supply for the iPhone 5s.

The bank believes that Samsung's upcoming Note 3, which has polarized technology journalists and consumers alike with reports of benchmark cheating and region locking, "should compete very well" against Apple's handsets. The future looks much more bleak for smaller competitors like HTC, BlackBerry, and Motorola, all three of whom Canaccord believes gave up share in the "high-tier smartphone market" to Apple.

According to the report, September brought "very weak" demand for HTC's flagship HTC One, while the Taiwanese company posted the first quarterly loss in its history earlier Friday. The story was similar for BlackBerry, which saw "very soft" sales of its new Z10 and Q10, and Motorola, where sales for its refreshed Droid lineup declined after Apple's new iPhones became available.

Last Friday, the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S officially became available in select countries worldwide. Now the data is in, and it turns out that the iPhone 5S is currently three times more popular than the multi-colored, plastic iPhone 5C.
The latest data comes by way of Localytics, where it is reported that the two newest iPhone models account for 1.36 percent of all iPhones activated in the United States. Looking a bit deeper, the iPhone 5C only represents the .31 percent of that figure – with the iPhone 5S representing 1.05 percent of iPhone activations.
This same trend extends to the rest of the globe, where there doesn’t seem to be a single market where the iPhone 5C is upstaging its more powerful brother – that includes developing markets like China.

What does this mean for the iPhone 5C?

Before we all start jumping up and down and shouting “the iPhone 5C is dead” – let’s take a step back for a minute.
The iPhone 5C is essentially the iPhone 5, with a plastic colored shell and a few other minor changes. In contrast, the iPhone 5S has a fingerprint reader, a 64-bit processor and an even more premium finish than the original iPhone 5.
That means there are likely folks coming from the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 over to the new iPhone 5S. As for the iPhone 5C? If you already have an iPhone 5, there’s little appeal here. That means the iPhone 5C has the potential to be more appealing to those with aging iPhones (4S and older) and first-time iPhone buyers.
These types of buyers are often ‘value’ customers that aren’t interested and rushing out for a device during its first week launch. The iPhone 5C isn’t about the short-term sales it will bring, but about the long-term.
Bottom-line, the iPhone 5C could end up as a colossal failure – but it’s really too early to make that call, one way or the other.
What do you think of the iPhone 5C, is it a good idea or not?

Bing recently underwent major changes with its logo, interface and features. Microsoft's search engine is in direct competition with web giants like Google and Yahoo. It might have been difficult for Bing to achieve dominance, but with Apple on its side, the search engine's chances are higher than ever. A latest update to Bing iOS application has got several tweaks and the most noteworthy one is the Siri integration.
If Apple users search for content on the Internet with Siri, the mobile assistant will  run a search through Bing.
A new logo, stunning interface, introduction of new features and modification of existing ones has got the search engine some prominence.
With the latest update to iOS Bing app, users can get what they want on the Internet with an ease. The new iOS app displays four tiles on the home page of the search app, Weather, Popular Now, Nearby and Images. These tiles on the front page will give useful information without having to run a type search.
"Bing search within Siri makes it easier than ever to find what you need by delivering various types of results - so you don't have to go to your browser to look at the same list of results," Bing explained in a blog post. "For example, when you ask Siri a question, you will either see a specific answer or search results from Bing, including web links, related searches, images and video."
In addition to the Siri integration and new interface, Bing also allows users to share images from within the app to their social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Another option will allow syncing saved images and screenshots to SkyDrive.
Users can also sync bookmarks and images from the latest version of the Bing desktop and android app.

Apple fanboys and Samsung believers aren't going to like this: Google's Moto X has been crowned the king of durability.
The latest "breakability" score by protection plan company SquareTrade claims Moto X is the best surviving smartphone when it comes to drops, slides, and water dunks. Coming in second place is Apple's iPhone 5S, then Apple's iPhone 5C, and lastly Samsung's Galaxy S4. SquareTrade only tested these four smartphones, so its unclear how other brands and models would rate.
Every year SquareTrade tests the durability of new smartphones to see how they fair during everyday accidents, like toilet plunges, counter drops, and unintended table slides.
SquareTrade first examines the phone's front and back panel design, edge construction, materials, size, weight, friction quotient, water resistance, and grip-ability; and then subjects the devices to break tests. Using robots to drop the phones onto their corners from five feet high, slide the smartphones across a table, and dunk the devices into water for 10 seconds, SquareTrade rates the breakability of each smartphone.
This year, Apple's iPhone 5C suffered a cracked screen in the drop test and finicky response after being submerged in water. The iPhone 5S fared better, with just a dented corner in the drop test and good response after the water dunk, but it failed the slide test by being the only device to glide right off the table.
In years past, the iPhone 5 did better than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and it appears this year wasn't much different. Despite Samsungbeefing up the durability of its Galaxy S4, the smartphone still came in last -- being rendered unusable -- in both the drop and dunk test; and, it very nearly slid off the table in the slide test.
While Apple's new iPhones and Samsung's Galaxy S4 got a bit tattered in the tests, Google's Moto X came out unscathed minus a small dent on the corner. SquareTrade said the smartphone's concave backing also "set a new bar" for the durability of its back panel design.
"We were expecting that at least one of the new iPhone models would up its game but surprisingly, it was the Moto X that proved most forgiving of accidents," SquareTrade CMO Ty Shay said in a statement. "This is the first time we've tested the breakability on a Motorola phone, the only phone we've ever tested that's made in the USA. We were pleased to find that it withstood our drop, slide and dunk test with only the slightest dent. It looks like Google is giving Apple and Samsung a run for their money."

Hot on the heels of a reported security flaw in iOS 7 that allows anyone to bypass the lock screen to access users’ personal data, a new bug was discovered in Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) revamped iOS, which lets anyone make a call even when the iPhone is on the passcode-protected lock screen.

According to a report by Forbes, the new vulnerability was discovered by Karam Daoud from the West Bank city of Ramallah in Palestine. In a video, Daoud showed that calls can be made to any number from a locked iPhone running iOS 7 by using a vulnerability in the device’s emergency calling function.
Daoud said that anyone who has physical access to a passcode-protected iPhone running iOS 7 can take advantage of the flaw by going to the emergency calling screen on the device. The person needs to dial a number and then rapidly tap the call button until an empty screen with an Apple logo appears and makes the call to the particular number.
Forbes said that Daoud had tested the bug on older iPhone models running iOS 7, and he found that it applied to them as well.
According to Forbes, while the first iOS 7 bug could easily be rectified by disabling the Control Center by toggling it off in the Settings app, Daoud’s flaw does not seem to have any immediate fix for it.
Regardless of all these security loopholes in iOS 7, users around the world are updating their devices to the latest version of the platform in increasing numbers. Nearly 32 percent of North American iOS Web-based traffic came from the iOS 7, two days after its release, according to one recent report.

Chitika, an online ad network, said in an update to an earlier report that iOS 7 accounted for 31.7 percent of the iOS traffic by the afternoon of Sept. 20, 48 hours following the release of the new OS.

Just ahead of the software being released to the public, we provided a guide on how to find some of the more hidden features in iOS 7 along with a few more we have discovered.
Deleting text messages
The old Edit button in the top right hand corner when reading messages has now disappeared.
In its place is a handy button that will let you call the person who sent the message or look at their contact details.
While this saves having to scroll through an entire conversation to reach the top where the button for contacts used to reside, it presents another problem - how to delete text messages.
For those wanting to delete an entire conversation, simply swipe to the left in the Messages screen.
However, if you want to keep some messages but delete others, this is less obvious.
Daisy Rojas tells us the solution: Hold down your finger on the message you want to delete and then a little speech bubble menu will pop up.
This gives you the option to either Copy the message or to select More
Tapping on More will bring up some circles on the left hand side.
Select the messages you want to delete so that a tick appears beside them and then tap the Trash Can in the bottom left hand corner.
You can also forward the messages using the arrow on the bottom right.
Time stamp on messages
While it has been possible to see a time and date for when messages were sent and received for some time, iOS 6 did not provide a time for every single message.
With iOS 7, at first this appears to be the same. Swipe your finger to the left on a message, however, and a time will appear beside every message in a conversation.
Removing recent contacts
Cameron Bell, from Ayr in Scotland, got in touch to tell us about a great little tip.
When typing the name of a contact in the To bar when writing an email or text message, a long list of recent contacts will often pop up alongside those who are listed in your contacts book.
While this can be helpful, it can also make it hard to find the right person when they are hidden in amongst a list of names that you only sent a message to once two months ago.
Now iOS 7 allows you to tackle that – simply tap the little i that appears next to the contact as you type.
You will be taken to a screen that allows you to add that person to your contacts book or Remove from Recents.
The Rain Falls Mainly on the Plain in Spain
Siri is terrible at pronunciation. It “rally rally” is. Particularly with places or names. Now you can give Siri an elocution lesson and train it to say them correctly.
Simply correct Siri with the words: “That’s not how you pronounce that.
Siri will then ask you to say the name or word again and you can teach it to get it right.
Turning on location services
Some readers have found the GPS and location services for their apps have been automatically switched off, meaning services such as Google Maps are unable to find their location.
Turning this back on is not immediately obvious as there are two places it can be turned on.
First go to Settings, then select Privacy and then Location Servicesand turn on the switch. You can then select which apps you want to use your location.
You can also turn off location based adverts by selecting System Services in this menu too.
In some cases, users have been unable to switch on Location Serviceshere.
In this case, go to Settings, then select General Settings, tapRestrictions and scroll down to Location Services under Privacy.
Tap Allow Changes and flick the switch for Location Services to On.
New Vibrations
Although iOS 7 comes with a range of new ringtones and alerts, there is another neat little feature that allows you to tap out your own custom vibration alert.
Hidden inside the Sounds menu in Settings is a Create New Vibrationoption.
Select Sounds, then select Ringtone, scroll up and select Vibration and then scroll down to Custom.
Tap Create New Vibration and then tap out a funky beat. Hold your finger down to get a longer vibration.
Twitter links
Apple has hidden away this nice little feature too – this time in Safari’s Bookmarks menu. Click on the @ symbol inside Bookmarks and it will bring up a list of tweets from your Twitter feed that contain links.
Select one and you will be taken to whatever your Twitter buddies are sharing without having to read about what everyone else was having for dinner.
Happy Birthday
If you have entered your birthday into your profile along with your contact details, then your iPhone will wish you a Happy Birthday when the day arrives.
Entering your address will also allow Siri to remind you to do something when you get home. The Notification Centre will also give you traffic updates in the morning too.
They are watching you
Apple has been using a function called Ad Tracking to look at your browsing activity and location.
It is collected anonymously, but the more paranoid out there would prefer to have this switched off.
In iOS 6, you had to do this through the About menu under Settings. Now, in iOS 7, it can be found under Privacy and then Advertising. Just flick the switch called Limit Ad Tracking
Come round for dinner tonight
Chris O'Connell tells us that when writing a text message to ask a friend inviting them over for dinner, the words appeared as a hyperlink.
When he clicked on them, he was given the option to Create an Event in his calendar, to Show in Calendar or to Copy.
While iOS 6 could do this with email messages that had been received occasionally, this whole function appears to have been upgraded and improved.
Block those spam texts
Matt Taylor and Dan Welyk tell us how it is also possible to block numbers from calling or texting you.
While looking at a text message, select Contact in the top right hand corner, select the little symbol, then scroll down and select Block.
Things that still baffle us
How to rescale a photo when it is used as wallpaper to see the whole of the image rather than a zoomed in version.
How to make the keyboard feel more substantial rather than with skinny keys.

With the iPhone 5C, available to preorder as of Sept. 13, Apple ended its tradition of sharing how new orders have smashed sales records.

The Apple iPhone 5C, the company's first colored-plastic iPhone and its first to debut at $99, became available to preorder Sept. 13. How many people have rushed to order one, however, isn't yet clear.
Apple has a habit of making its early successes known. The iPhone 5 became available for preorder Sept. 14, 2012, and three days later, Apple put out a statement saying that preorders had topped 2 million in just the first 24 hours—that it "shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S."
After the iPhone 4S became available for preorder, requests topped 1 million in a single day, Apple said in an October 2011 statement, "surpassing the previous single day preorder record of 600,000 held by iPhone 4."
"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said at the time," and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."

Apple isn't saying. It hasn't released a statement, and requests for comment went unanswered.
In China—a market for which the lower-cost plastic iPhone 5C is more directly intended—response is said to be modest.
China Unicom, China's second-largest telecom, announced Sept. 16 that it had received more than 100,000 orders over a five-day period, according to China.org. Last year, the carrier recorded more than 200,000 orders for the iPhone 5 in just 48 hours.
Carrier China Telecom isn't revealing its preorder numbers, the report added. And while Apple and China Mobile—China's leading and the world's largest carrier—are said to be working on a deal, Apple hasn't announced it yet.
In a first, Apple introduced the iPhone 5C along with the higher-end iPhone 5S at an event in Beijing Sept. 11, a day after the phones received their U.S. unveiling. Traditionally, new iPhones have arrived in China months behind their U.S. release, but on Sept. 20, both phones will go on sale in both countries. The gesture speaks to Apple's courtship of China, which it expects eventually to replace the United States as its number-one revenue generator.

Apple, as you might know, is a company that has in the past found pleasure in boasting about the pre-order numbers of their previous iPhones. The company told us that their iPhone 4 was pre-ordered 600,000 times within a day. In just 24 hours, their iPhone 4S pre-orders surpassed one million, and the numbers were doubled with the iPhone 5. But surprisingly they have not revealed how things are going with the iPhone 5C pre-orders.
According to AllThingsD’s John Paczowski, Apple’s silence and China Telecom’s cutting of subsidies are the reasons behind the falling of Apple shares.
Without Apple providing pre-order numbers, there seems to be no way to know about the consumer interest for the iPhone 5C. Looking at the pre-order page for the plastic device, we can see that all the models still have a delivery date of 9/20. In the past, we have seen delivery dates being pushed back in a day or two. So maybe people haven’t ordered too many iPhone 5Cs.
But it’s also probable that Apple might be prepared to deliver all the pre-ordered iPhone 5Cs on September 20th no matter how big the numbers are. The iPhone 5C is basically an iPhone 5 coming in a colored plastic case, so Apple may not have any problems with the components and supply.
Meanwhile, there might be supply issues with the iPhone 5S due to the device’s A7 chip and the fingerprint sensor. The device is not available for pre-order; you will be able to get the device at Apple retail stores or online from Friday onwards.
So, have you pre-ordered the iPhone 5C? Let us know in the comments below.

With two weeks to go until Apple’s scheduled Sept. 10 event, fresh rumors about what the company’s next iPhone will look like and do are emerging daily.
Photos reportedly leaked by an employee of an Apple supplier last week added more evidence that a cheap, plastic-frame iPhone 5C will be released in six colors (white, black, green, blue, pink and yellow). Besides the lack of a metallic outside, the 5C may not have the Siri assistant app.
A top-of-the-line version, which would be called 5S if Apple follows previous naming conventions, is also reportedly in the works. It's likely to have a processor that’s slightly faster and less draining on the battery.
The newest rumors suggest that the 5S will come in gray/silver, gold, black and white.
Among other features, the 5S is to have an improved camera and larger storage. The camera, with an f-stop of 2.0, would have a wider aperture than its predecessors, allowing for sharpers images in low lighting.
The home button on the 5S is expected to double as a fingerprint reader that could power a range of security features.
If Apple follows past practice, the phones would be released in late September.
Previous iPhones have cost $199 at launch when coupled with a two-year service contract, but the company is reportedly training employees about a trade-in program that would allow users of older iPhones to exchange those devices for discounted newer ones.
Customers who prefer to trade-in for potentially higher prices can lock in current prices by signing up now on resell website Gazelle.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has rolled out its rumored iPhone trade-in program, enabling a consumer to receive a credit that would go toward buying either the new iPhone 5S or the new iPhone 5C, which are expected to be officially announced at a special media event on Sept. 10.

“[I]Phones hold great value. So, Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling,” Apple representative Amy Bessette said in a statement. “In addition to helping support the environment, customers will be able to receive a credit for their returned phone that they can use toward the purchase of a new iPhone.”
As previously reported, the trade-in program, dubbed the iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program, is part of company CEO Timothy D. Cook’s effort to improve iPhone sales at physical retail locations.
“I see channels doing it, and I like the environmental aspect of it, and so that part of it really is encouraging to me,” Cook said during Apple’s June earnings call. “The reason that is so attractive around an iPhone is that the residual value of an iPhone stays so high. That makes the trade-in programs a win-win from many points of view.”

Multiple sources have informed BGR that AT&T has blacked out vacation days for the second half of September in preparation for theiPhone 5S launch date. This has taken place every single year starting with the first iPhone launch, and it limits AT&T employee vacations and time off. We were also told that AT&T will not be launching any other high-profile devices during the second half of September, again confirming that this time period is for the upcoming iPhones. An earlier report noted that T-Mobile has issued a vacation blackout for September 20th through the 22nd, and coupled with an almost-confirmed September 10th announcement event, it sure looks like September 20th is a go for launch in the U.S. and other countries.

The iPhone 5S is reportedly physically similar to the iPhone 5, and has internal enhancement and upgrades such as a faster processor, more memory, a better camera and a fingerprint sensor. The iPhone 5C should use most of the iPhone 5 components, except it will repackage them in a plastic case that will be available in multiple bright colors and for a lower price than Apple’s current phones.
