| U.S. military : $50 million for massive software piracy |
Typically when you read about the U.S. government and piracy, it’s about some unfortunate file sharer who’s being slapped with a massive fine for uploading a few songs or TV shows. This time, however, the government itself was caught red-handed pirating.
Almost a decade ago, the Bush administration signed a contract with Apptricity — a company that develops warehouse, fleet, and asset management software. The original licensing agreement was for five servers and 150 additional devices. The deal would have netted Apptricity around $2.1 million. A decent score, but a mere fraction of what they actually should have been paid.
If the government was subjected to the same stiff fines, they’d be on the hook for around $33 trillion. Apptricity “generously” only went after what they were actually owed: a still-staggering $224 million in additional licensing fees.
